Hill & Markes Inc., is a family owned business for over 100 years. We are recognized and respected for the growth and professional approach within the wholesale distribution industry. Hill & Markes distributes janitorial, industrial packaging, food service, ice cream products, farm and office products to various market segments throughout the country. Hill & Markes is owned and operated by Neal Packer, C.O.O., Andrea Finkle Packer, Vice President of Marketing, and Jeffrey Finkle, President.

Amos Hill and Charlie Markes opened Hill & Markes in 1906 as a candy, ice cream and ice cream cone distributor and serviced customers from Amsterdam to Galway. Amos Hill and Charlie Markes added candy to their wares and made deliveries by horse and buggy and even by horse and sleigh in the winter months. Family members made the ice cream cones.

In 1947, Harry and Harriet Finkle purchased the company and expanded the product line to include school supplies, paper products, rental dishes and cutlery. The reins were turned over to the next generation in the 1970’s. Although the business has changed, you can still purchase ice cream cones and toppings from Hill & Markes.

 

Recent history has included the celebration of the Centennial Year of the company. In addition, on August 5, 2004, Hill & Markes hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate its latest warehouse expansion. The keynote speaker, former First Lady, United States Senator, and Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton offered inspiring words.

The Business Review of the Capital District most recently applauded our company as a top capital district employer. Network Services, an industry affiliation, noted Hill & Markes with an Outstanding Performance Award. The company received a Green Cleaning Champion Award from nationally-recognized Steven Ashkin. Many local agencies have also given recognition for various reasons including Disability Employment, Family Business Leader, as well as the local chamber of commerce.
